The new mum, who was reportedly surprised by the size of her daughter, gave birth on her own in the town of Dagestanskiye Ogni, in south-western Russia's Republic of Dagestan. The family declined to name the woman or give further details about the baby girl, other than to say it was the woman's fifth child. She weighed 6.3 kilogrammes (13 lbs 14 ounces). Local health watchdogs released details of the birth and confirmed that both mother and daughter were doing well. But a spokesman added: "Of course this is overweight, this is pathology. According to the medical team, the baby has problems with hearing. Other problems may occur in the future." Netizen ‘Sofia Goncharova’ commented: "Poor woman!", while 'Diana’ added: "Usually kids can get so heavy in cases when their mother has diabetes. Sometimes it can be the first stage of diabetes." And another online commentator, going under the name of ‘Vlad Zubov’, commented simply: "This is crazy." The average birth weight for babies of European heritage is 3.5 kilogrammes (7 lbs 11 ounces), with all but five percent of newborns weighing between 2.5 kilogrammes (5 lbs 8 ounces) and 5 kilogrammes (11 lbs). According to Guinness World Records, the heaviest baby born to a healthy mother was a boy weighing 10.2 kilogrammes (22 lbs 8 ounces) who was born in the city of Aversa, Italy, in September 1955.
